Adrian Smith Reflects on Nicko McBrain’s “Heartbreaking” Departure from Iron Maiden

In a recent interview with Metal Hammer España, Iron Maiden guitarist Adrian Smith opened up about the departure of long-term drummer Nicko McBrain. The announcement in December 2024 marked the legendary heavy metal band’s first line-up change in a quarter of a century, ending an era for fans worldwide.

Smith acknowledged the immense physical toll that performing with the band takes, particularly behind the kit. “I think the Maiden drumming gig is one of the toughest, for sure,” he explained. “It’s very, very physical.”

The Impact of Health Challenges

The decision followed McBrain’s health struggles after he suffered a stroke. While McBrain has made significant progress, Smith noted that he did not make a full recovery, which ultimately impacted his ability to perform the band’s complex and high-energy repertoire.

“Unfortunately, [the stroke] really affected his playing,” Smith shared. “But thank God he’s doing okay now. But, yeah, it’s a serious thing. And this is life. And let’s face it, we’re not kids anymore.”

Smith revealed that the transition was far from easy, describing the situation as “heartbreaking”. Despite McBrain’s best efforts to continue during recent tours, it became clear to both the drummer and the band that a change was necessary for Iron Maiden to move forward.

“Nick was such a big — and he still is, really — a big part of the band, and he always will be,” Smith added. “He just had a massive presence. And people love him. We all love him. And he’s an incredible drummer.”

The Legacy of Iron Maiden

Formed in Leyton, East London, in 1975 by bassist and primary songwriter Steve Harris, Iron Maiden became the spearhead of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. After finding underground success, the band exploded globally in the early 1980s with the arrival of vocalist Bruce Dickinson and the release of the seminal album The Number of the Beast. Over the decades, they have become one of the most successful and influential bands in history, known for their elaborate stage sets and their iconic mascot, Eddie.

Nicko McBrain joined the group in 1982, making his debut on the Piece of Mind album. His unique, single-pedal drumming style became a cornerstone of the “Maiden sound” for over forty years. Even with this recent change in the line-up, the band’s legacy remains firmly intact as they continue to perform for millions of dedicated “Blood Brothers” across the globe.
